Food Security
In Italy, as elsewhere, the following Regulation is applied and is compulsory: Regulation (EC) n. 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 January 2002 laying down the general principles and requirements of food law, establishing the European Food Safety Authority and laying down procedures in matters of food safety. In the European market “food shall not be placed if it is unsafe” (Article 14.1).
Genetically modified foods are not, as a basic principle, in contrast with food security. However, the concerns with regard to possible harmful effects and their influence on human health have induced the European Union to introduce rules requiring a specific authorisation as well as labelling to indicate that a given product has been made with GMOs, before such products can be brought into use and marketed.
